In Studio City, October means more than just Reese’s pumpkins and haunted houses. It’s also a time to celebrate El Dia de los Muertos, or “The Day of the Dead.” And if you’re searching for an authentic experience, Studio City’s Hollywood Forever Cemetery is where you’ll find it- at their 19th annual Dia de los Muertos Festival on Oct 27.
Studio City Dia de los Muertos Festival
Bright costumes, exciting music, arts & crafts- expect a celebration unlike anything you’ve probably experienced before at this year’s Dia de los Muertos Festival. On Oct 27, from noon until midnight, you’ll have the chance to sample authentic Mexican cuisine, create festive art, witness Aztec ritual dancers and participate in costume contests (guests are encouraged to wear costumes). Peruse over 100 traditional altars created by local community members in remembrance of their ancestors and loved ones. Throughout the entire day, unique music, dance and theater performances will take over the four different stages on-site. The best part? All of this is happening at Studio City’s Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the resting place to more of Hollywood’s founders and stars than anywhere else on earth. General Admission is $25 per person and free for children 8 years and under, before 4 p.m. The hourly event schedule can be found here.
Mini History Lesson
So why all of the extravagant costumes and decorated altars? El Dia de los Muertos is an ancient tradition dating back to the pre-Hispanic cultures of Meso-America and serves as a way to reunite families with their ancestors and loved ones. Dia de los Muertos does not mourn the loss of loved ones, but rather celebrates their life in a happy and colorful way. People use food, music and incense to guide the dead to the celebration. And overall, the day is meant to teach us to accept and contemplate the meaning of mortality.
